Teaching Philosophy

The days of teachers standing in front of classrooms droning on for 40 to 45 minute blocks are long over. Leave that to the college lecturers. In an elementary classroom, at least, things have to be dynamic, shifting, moving. Stasis is the enemy.

I believe that as a teacher I'm not someone handing down knowledge. I always feel like I'm discovering things along with my students. I try to keep the same perspective as them. Try to be surprised, try to show emotions, try to be there, not somewhere else, thinking boring grown up thoughts. Students, somehow or other, all pick up on a lot of things by themselves; you don't have to tell them everything. The role of the teacher is to facilitate that learning, to maybe provide the key that allows them unlock something new within themselves (to get all metaphorical for a bit). I cannot sit back and simply witness learning. Learning is something that's created together, student and teacher.
